DANOK OTEIZA

The Jorge Oteiza Museum Foundation presents the new DANOK OTEIZA community, coinciding with the anniversary of the artist’s birth. Its aim is to bring together people and organisations to promote the figure of the creator

The Jorge Oteiza Museum Foundation, coinciding with the anniversary of the artist’s birth, presents DANOK OTEIZA, friends of the Foundation, a community around the figure and thought of Jorge Oteiza and his creative and cultural legacy. This community is articulated as a living organism that will complement the activity and actions developed by the Alzuza Museum.
DANOK OTEIZA aims to respond to Oteiza’s own conception that art and creation constitute a powerful tool for social and collective transformation while at the same time contributing to the promotion of a critical spirit and the creation of a shared imaginary.

DANOK OTEIZA aims to serve as a reference for people or entities that want to share and identify with Jorge Oteiza’s creative, aesthetic and cultural ideology, participating and interacting in a shared dynamic, in which life and culture are projected together towards today’s society. It is conceived as an open community and is envisaged complementary to the activity of the Oteiza Museum and will evolve in time and space, according to the different contributions of its members.

In this sense, DANOK OTEIZA responds to the commitment made by the Jorge Oteiza Foundation in its Articles, which mention the need to set up an association:

“A channel for collaboration of all those who may be interested in the knowledge and dissemination of the Founder’s work, as well as in the support and promotion of all those activities that contribute to the development of the foundational objectives.”

DANOK OTEIZA has as its main objectives:

  1. To disseminate and expand Jorge Oteiza’s work and thought through various actions promoted by his Foundation and in collaboration with other entities.
  2. To generate an open, plural and participative community around the creator’s ideology.
  3. To strengthen a permanent structure of collaboration that facilitates the development of the actions necessary to achieve these goals.

To form part of this community, a number of categories of friends have been created, whose names are inspired by key concepts in Oteiza’s aesthetic imaginary, such as:

  • CROMLECH: bringing together the two entities promoting the project (Government of Navarre and the Jorge Oteiza Museum Foundation).
  • GAUR (strategic partners). More than 200.000 € a year
  • EMEN (patrons). 25.000-200.000 € a year
  • ORAIN (partners). 6.000-25.000 € a year
  • BAITA (friendly entitie). 1.000-6.000 € a year
  • HITZA (media)
  • ITZIAR (a tribute to his wife Itziar Carreño. For individual members) 30€ per year.

First DANOK OTEIZA projects

Thanks to the support of various entities and people who have begun to form part of Danok Oteiza, a number of essential projects have been set in motion for the formation of this community.

Oteiza 14 apostolu

Audiovisual piece by Oskar Alegria on the ideas of Jorge Oteiza, with the participation of fourteen cultural figures from different contexts who represent the diversity of artistic disciplines and cultural interests linked to the work and aesthetic thought of the Orio-born creator. The common premise that determines the structure of the project is the invitation for each participant to interact with a mask representing a specific concept suggested by Oskar Alegria:

  • Alicia Otaegui, apostle of the mask
  • Ignacio Agüero, American apostle
  • Iban Urizar, apostle of the air
  • Esther Ferrer, apostle of silence
  • Oskar Alegria, apostle of the North West
  • Josu Iztueta, apostle of the mountains
  • Sho Hagio, apostle of the East
  • Jaione Apalategi, chalk apostle
  • Richard Deacon, fabricator apostle
  • Maialen Lujanbio, apostle of the bertso
  • Bernardo Atxaga, apostle of the labyrinth
  • Kepa Akixo Zigor, apostle of dawn
  • Bertha Bermúdez, apostle of the gesture
  • The ash tree of Alzuza, the last apostle

This project is the result of the collaboration between the Jorge Oteiza Museum Foundation and EITB, which has produced and financed the production of this audiovisual. Oteiza, 14 apostolu, will be broadcast on the PRIMERAN platform, on ETB, eitb.eus, and will also be shown at the Oteiza Museum Casa-taller.

Graphic novel by writer and cartoonist Asisko Urmeneta

The aim of producing a graphic novel about Jorge Oteiza is to allow visual and textual access to Oteiza’s work, biography and thought through a tool for dissemination with a high social impact that will allow us to connect with other audiences. This project is currently under development and will be completed by the end of 2026.

Guide to the Oteiza Museum

A new edition of the Oteiza Museum Guide has been republished thanks to the collaboration of CARDIVA. This guide is essential for an in-depth visit to the Museum and as a reference publication on Oteiza’s work and thought.
